Psychologist Derald Wing Sue has defined microaggressions as “brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their group membership.” As educators, we are not immune to this social phenomenon. Rather, we are most susceptible when our practice exists in a state of unawareness. With reflection and increased attention to our own cultural blind spots, educators can decrease the occurrence and harm from microaggressions.
